Our organization changes as the size of the troop changes. We have discovered that the traditional way of structuring the patrols is better than placing all the new scouts into one patrol. Distributing the new, younger, scouts into the existing patrols, provides them with role models and provides the older scouts with the opportunity to teach and guide the new scouts. We have also noticed that the old method is faster at getting new scouts advanced in rank. We try to place the new scout into the same patrol as their friends from cub scouts. Also, the patrol competitions provide an incentive for the experienced scouts to share thier knowledge, providing the new scouts with the training and the basic scout skills.
